A-Rod

I really hope the Red Sox don't court Arod around this off-season. He's a monster in the regular season but garbarge in the post-season. Do you think the Yankees make a strong push to sign Lowell, either to push up the price on the Sox or to make a genuine attempt at signing him?

The Sox would be stupid to not sign Lowell asap...not only does it screw A-Rod, but the Yankees won't have the chance to drive up the price. His value is greater at Fenway where his double power is exemplified, and his glove is as good as there is. He was struggling in Florida, because it's a tough park to hit in and he was getting older...he's rejuvenated in Boston and both Boston and Lowell would be foolish to part ways.
Boston can always make a run at A-Rod for SS and eat the 4? years left on Lugo..or package him and crisp for a top notch psychiatrist for A-Rod.
I see A-Rod losing money by opting out of the deal with the yanks...no way do 2.5 teams (Boston's half hearted attempt) competing for him offer 30 mill a year for 10 years.

I agree, the Sox need to lock up Lowell before he hits the open market ... not only will the Yankees offer him big money, plenty of other competitive (a few moves away from being a WS contender) and big money teams need a productive 3rd baseman, like the Phillies, Dodgers, Angels & the Giants. And while A-Rod is clearly the better player, most teams might prefer to try to get Lowell, because his "bang for the buck" value is much better than A-Rod, and he's proven he can also do it in the playoffs. He'll get you there and keep you going, unlike A-Rod, who'll get you there and then play with his hands around his neck. So the Sox should suck it up, and give Lowell the extra year he most likely desires, and over-pay him a little, because he also brings an excellent clubhouse presence that can't be measured by statistics (much like Jason Varitek, who the Sox overpaid for statistically but get more back in intangibles and clubhouse leadership).

Now, if the Sox fail to resign Lowell, don't expect them to go after A-Rod, because they are on record saying they'd be interested in A-Rod in "their terms" which won't be what Boras has in mind. I'd expect the back-up plan for A-Rod is to sign a 1st baseman and move Youk back over to 3rd. Who that might be escapes me now, I need to see a list of free agent 1st baseman.

If the Sox do move Youk to third...expect to see Sean Casey or perhaps even Delgado in a Sox uni.

Manny is also rearming by shopping around for a new agent...things can get dicey for Theo this offseason or he could make it easy on himself and just sign Lowell and play golf in Hawaii until March...

He was a top talent he was traded for Jeff Weaver, back when Weaver was considered an ace...he just needed a low pressure environment to succeed or he said screw it and loaded up on HGH...

Pena is a free agent - he signed a 1-year, 800K deal with the Devil Rays. Seems he's due for a raise. And being from Haverhill (and attended Northeastern) he might actually take a hometown discount to play for the Sox, although I believe his agent is Scott Boras, so he could be due for the largest overpayment in sports history. And he'll turn 30 next May, so the sudden increase in offensive output is suspicious, especially in this day and age. However, if the Sox were to go the cheaper (than Lowell) route and get Pena (and excellent defensive 1st baseman as well), their lineup next year could look like this:
CF Ellsbury (L)
2B Pedroia (R)
DH Ortiz (L)
LF Ramirez (R)
1B Pena (L)
3B Youkilis (R)
RF Drew (L)
C Varitek (S)
SS Lugo (R)
If that Lefty-Righty lineup isn't Theo's wed dream, I don't know what is. Although it's probably not a good sign that in this potential lineup, the 7 thru 9 hitters would earn a collective $33M next season, more than a few teams' entire payrolls.

For the record, my preference is to keep WS MVP Mike Lowell, but this wouldn't be the worst contigency plan.

I think Pena signed a deal as well. I'm assuming if the Sox go after him they'll have to send some pretty decent talent to TB. What are the chances of Todd Helton moving to Boston if we don't get Mike Lowell signed?

I don't think he's going to leave Colorado...the team is in a position to continue winning and he loves it there.

Upon further review, he's arbitration-eligible this coming year, so he can only sign with the Rays. Boras is his agent and he plans to get Pena a multi-year extension. I apologize for the misinformation.
