What a game, what a season.
I've had the pleasure of attending several Celtics games with my dad, a Celtics season-ticket holder since 1979 (he got them the day after the Celtics drafted a fellow by the name of Larry Bird, you may have heard of him). Game 6 was the most enjoyable experience of my life as a sports fan. There is NOTHING that compares to seeing your favorite team win the championship. It is the ultimate fan reward. Being there with my dad was extra special as well; he's raised me as a Boston sports fan, to the point where I don't even know when my love of the Celtics, Red Sox & Patriots began - it was just always the way.
And getting to see them win it - wow. I'm still at a loss for words. I wanted to write earlier in the week, but I couldn't find the right words. I still can't really. I've heard from some people (non-Celtics fans) who said that game was a boring finale to a great NBA season, one of the best in years. And maybe it was boring for outsiders, but for us Celtics fans, it was the best possible way: no doubt and no stress. After a fantastic season where they looked unbeatable for long stretches, they looked surprisingly shaky (on the road) in their first round series against the woeful (but talented) Hawks. They couldn't shake the road woes against the LeBrons, but pulled out that series with another seven-gamer (another game I attended this postseason - truly a classic Game 7). But when it all looked lost when they lost at home against the Pistons in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals, they came out for Game 3 in Detroit and finally looked like themselves again: the team with the best record in the NBA. And then they took another one on the road to advance to the Finals. Then there was the Comeback Game. But after a rather close 5 games (in which the Celtics looked like the superior team), everything went right last Tuesday night. Everything. The entire 2nd half was just one big long coronation - and I wouldn't have it any other way. High-fives and hugs and smiles and fist pumps, shared with the other season-ticket holders that sit near us, as we all got to just cheer and be happy and finally not worry.
Sure, it could have been cool to see Ray Allen hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, but it would have been a stressful three hours. This was a stressful twenty to thirty minues followed by over two hours of partying. With about 5 minutes to go, KG locked up Pau for a jumpball and a timeout was called - KG went to the bench fired up, and the team finally let it out. The smiles, the hugs. Paul Pierce dancing on the bench during a timeout with 3 minutes left, then dumping Gatorade on Doc, then the final buzzer and all that confetti. There are not words in the language that accurately describe how awesome of moments those all were.
And all of you out there who grew to love a team thanks to your dad, imagine sharing that sporting moment with him. Truly priceless. A few days after the game, I stopped in at my parents for dinner, and we were still sporting shit-eating grins about the game, the season and the championship. My dad summed it up perfectly: "That was so fun. Getting in there early, getting dinner and some beers, and then the game - I wish I could re-live that day!" He's dead right too - if Bill Murray was a Celtics fan and that was his 'Groundhog Day,' I doubt he'd worry about finally seeing tomorrow.
