Since I bitched about the referees before Game 3, I figured I'd comment on tonight's assigned referees for Game 4. Steve Javie (one of the best refs), Joe DeRosa (part of the 2006 mugging of the Mavericks mentioned previously) & Tom Washington (don't really know him, which probably means he isn't that bad) are the assigned referees.
Let's look at this statistically, by the home team's records in games refereed by these three men: Javie (43-34, .558); DeRosa (51-29, .638) and Washington (53-27, .663). Home teams went 739-491 during the season (.601 winning percentage). So you can see that DeRosa & Washington are the type of refs that don't like an angry crowd, as home teams win much more than the average when they ref. And the Finals are more lucrative if Sunday's Game 5 is a tied series versus one team trying to stay alive. Just sayin' ...
Although, in light of Tim Donaghy's recent allegations, I am going to take it with a grain of salt, since David Stern has a point - he's a convicted felon trying to get a lighter sentence. Stern has the right argument, but it's the pompous, arrogant way he delivers this message that has people believing Donaghy. Stern needs to come off as humble and concerned, and possibly investigate (or at least claim he's going to investigate) to gain some public trust. So while I joke about the refs and NBA in collaboration, I actually don't believe that this could possibly happen. Except for Kings-Lakers Game 6 in '02, something was definitely up there.
